From 1895 until the early 1930s, All-Black hockey teams in the Maritimes challenged each other to exciting matches and – the ultimate prize – the Colored Hockey Championship.  The stamp shows the Halifax Eurekas, the team that won the Championship in 1904. The inscription at the top of the stamp recognizes 8 teams that were in the league: Dartmouth Jubilees, Halifax Stanleys, Africville Sea-Sides, Truro Victorias, Charlottetown West End Rangers, Amherst Royals, Hammond Plains Moss Backs and Halifax Eurekas.
