Stone, Designer Catalog number: Scott 178d Location: Ice Hockey Volume LXVII Stamp ID = 5747 Thanks to Victor Afanasiev (Виктор Афанасьев), a member of a Russian stamp collector forum, for tracking down Micronesia 178d (Scott), a stamp depicting Thomas O. M. Sopwith. Besides being an aviation pioneer (as per depiction on the stamp), Sopwith was also a hockey player. Moreover, he was a goaltender on the British team at the European Championship in 1910 (the very first one), where Great Britain won a gold medal. Stamp shows Thomas O.M. Mail continues to be handled by the U.S. Postal Service. Micronesia became fully independent in 1991. |
