The envelope with the hockey cachet, thecancel and theleaflet inside the envelope were issued and approved by the Kingston Hockey Centennial Committee with sponsorship of the International Hockey Hall of Fame. According to the IHHF the first organized game of hockey was played in Kingston on March 10, 1886. Since 1969 an historic hockey series is played on the ice of Kingston harbor using original rules and equipment.
